Debunking Common Myths about Learning

Snow&Co has designed and developed three mobile-phone “myth-busters” for ISTE’s Course of Mind inititiative.

Each episode takes on a popular myth about education, examining the how the myth formed, what’s true (or not), and what learning sciences tell us about what really does work best for learning.

The episodes are a new kind of “scrolling story” combining text, illustration, and animation to clearly and engagingly unpack each learning myth. They are cross platform web apps that load and run instantly on any phone, and also on laptops and chromebooks.

We’ll say more about them below, or you can play them right now, by clicking one of the images below.  Each episode is 3-4 minutes.

Myth 1: Learning Styles

Myth 2: Left-Right Brain

Myth 3: Should Learning be Easy?

The episodes are part of ISTE’s Course of Mind initiative, aiming to make learning with edtech more meaningful by bringing together the learning sciences and teacher’s own teaching experience.   ISTE will also be offering a 2-hour micro-course paired with each Episode, for those who want to go further.

The myths we debunk are popular, and can lead any of us to misunderstand the learning challenges we (or our students or children) face, and how we all can actually learn more effectively.

The episodes were designed and developed by Snow & Co, working with ISTE. Our aim was to make them as easy as possible to dive into, from any device, and to make them fun and engaging while clearly describing the science.

We’ve ended up with a new media mashup we are calling “Scrolling stories”.  Scroll-stories let users dive right in, from a link or a social-media post, and then engage with animation, images, graphics and text, letting the user go at their own pace.  And they “just work” on any device, and are not expensive to produce, and meet accessibility guidelines.

If you’d be interested in exploring a Scrolling Story for a project you’re working on, please get in touch.
