In 2016, Bert led a research project for the Gates Foundation, looking at how game-based learning could improve outcomes for nontraditional students in higher ed.The research included interviews and focus groups with students and educators as well as surveying over 1700 students on-line.

The research pointed at many ways that game-based learning can be valuable, and it also highlighted hurdles that have prevented GBL from having more impact.  These include cost, ability to fit with curriculum, fit with student’s needs and lives, mobile support, accessibility, and more.

The research findings inspired Muzzy Lane to refocus on developing a cloud-based service that addresses many of these hurdles: Muzzy Lane Author.

ML Author is a platform and service that enables the creation and sharing of cross-platform game-based activities that promote critical thinking and problem solving. The activities allow students to analyze information, make decisions, and quickly see outcomes. Author provides sophisticated assessment and scoring of student performance using game techniques, and provides useful feedback to students and teachers.

Author is being used by partners including McGraw-Hill Education, Western Governors University, Arizona State University, KidCitizen (for the Library of Congress) and others.
